A-re-ru-gii (Japanese for allergy)
i now have allergies. no joking. I endured 3 or 4 days of nonstop sneezing and nose gushing out mucus to realize this fact. So I went to the doctor and got some real great medicine. It's called Allergra, maybe you've heard of it? ahh when I saw him write the prescription in katakana and sounded out the name of the drug I was like a-re-gu-ra, hmm that sounds familiar. Then it dawned on me that the drug prescribed by my Japanese ear, nose, and throat doctor was some american medicine. go figure. It seems to help me, I can breath much better and only have to blow my nose a few times a day so that is a great improvement.
In other news the word for runny nose in Japanese is hana mizu which means water nose. I think it's funny.

Given the number of Japanese that have fairly serious hay fever, I'm amazed that they don't have as much over-the-counter allergy medication as we do in America. Nothing beats a daily loratadine.
"Allergy" is one of the most useful Japanese words to learn. Oh, what's for lunch today? Squid bladder? Uh... oh, sumimasen. Arerugii....

Ahh, that seems like a great idea! I've never had anything as gross sounding as squid bladder.
But I'm working on a way to convince people I'm allergic to niboshi, the tiny, silver, whole, salty, gross dried fish,(I imagine hearing/feeling their eyes burst in my mouth every time I look at them - which makes me gag if I even think of actually putting them into my mouth). Yet I love Tasty Tasty Salmon! I wish it was in school lunch every single day. So I have to figure out how to convince those prying eyes that I'm allergic to small gross fish, but not large tasty fish...

Oh, don't get me started on those little dried fish! Blech! The part I really hate is that the students get theirs on the side, but the teachers get theirs ON THEIR RICE. And the woman who serves the lunch knows that I like rice, so she gives me extra fish on top!
One of the teachers told her students to pester me to eat more of the school lunch (grrrr...), but now I've pretty much got them convinced that I can't eat any vegetables, or anything from the sea.
Unfortunately, one boy knows that I like tsuna. He will have to be silenced...
